September 2014: Oakville Dental Newsletter

Are You in Back to School Mode?

With kids heading back to school, September often feels like summer is over, for everyone. But there are many more months of nice, warm weather, so be sure to do all the things you would like to do before the temperature drops!

Remember to take a moment every day to relax and breathe; while the immediate effect may not be obvious, stress and oral health are related. Stress contributes to grinding and clenching teeth, canker sores and even gum disease. We suggest starting your day off with a nutritious breakfast and thinking positively about the day ahead while you brush your teeth and floss. Not only will this give you a few minutes to yourself, it will help to ward off some of the effects of stress on your oral health.

We Are Proud To Welcome Back Julie Cassidy

We've brought back a familiar face at Oakdale Dental. Former receptionist, Julie Cassidy left us a few years back to attend school for Dental Hygiene. She's since completed her education and has returned to Oakdale Dental as part of our Hygienist team.

Be sure to congratulate her during your next visit.

Have a safe and healthy month.

Go Ahead, Stick Your Tongue Out At The Dentist.

I always know my regular patients like me when I sit down to do a routine examination, a checkup. How? They stick out their tongues! Quite a lot if not most stick their tongues out at me as soon as I ask them to open their mouths for a look. You see, I have them "trained". They know the first thing I do is look for oral cancer and stick your tongue out at theoakvilledentist.com one of the places I need to look is under their tongues.

Gum Disease and Diabetes

Gum disease is an infection in the gum, bone and tissues. Gum disease may eventually result in unstable base for your teeth, which then become mobile and may fall out or have to be removed.

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a primary cause of tooth loss, and is often linked to diabetes.

Diabetes slows blood circulation, which can contribute to the onset of infections of gum tissues. High saliva sugar levels associated with diabetes contribute to the growth of bacteria which causes gum disease.

Smoking and poor oral hygiene for people with diabetes significantly heightens the incidence of gum disease.
